What is a cecum?

Cecum is a blind ended tube - like structure that extends from the intestine and holds food for an extended period of time to enhance digestion and absorption of nutrients. In humans it is a reduced vestigial structure such as appendix, whereas in some animals it is highly functional and active structure such as malpigian tubules of insects.
